Saints, star CB 'moving forward' following trade chatter

New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen said on Monday that he and Marshon Lattimore talked recently, and things were "moving forward" with the cornerback's possible return to the team.

The 28-year-old defensive back was selected by the Saints with the 11th overall pick during the 2017 NFL Draft and he made his first Pro Bowl that season, finishing with a career high five interceptions while earning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors as well. Lattimore earned three more Pro Bowl nods in 2019, 2020 and 2021 before signing a five-year, $97.6M contract extension with New Orleans in September 2021.

He suffered a lacerated kidney in Week 5 of the 2022 campaign and didn't return until Week 17, finishing the year with a career low seven games played. Lattimore was put on injured reserve last November due to an ankle injury and appeared in just 10 contests, recording eight passes defended and one interception.

The Saints and the Ohio State product restructured his contract in January, converting $13.7M of his 2024 salary into an option bonus, which cleared $11M of cap space, per Spotrac.

Lattimore is set to earn a base salary of $1.2M in 2024.

ESPN's projected depth chart for New Orleans currently has Lattimore lining up opposite 2021 third-round pick Paulson Adebo and being joined by second-year safety Jordan Howden and three-time Pro Bowler Tyrann Mathieu.
